Information for Schools
Before a school considers joining NALP, it needs to think about:
- Dedicating specific resources
- Setting priorities for time and energy
- Making a whole school commitment (including the School Council) to Accelerated Literacy and NALP for all teaching and management staff within a school.
The Accelerated Literacy methodology requires teachers to take on an alternative way of teaching literacy that creates a supportive and structured learning environment which will help even the most marginalised students to learn in a positive way.
The DET AL Team acts as the trainers and change agents in training teachers in the methodology. The training approach is very hands-on, with the DET AL Team providing on-going school-based support to teachers, including demonstration lessons.
An implementation plan for the continuous expansion of NALP has identified NT schools for future inclusion in the program; the preparation of schools is staggered to match this plan. Initially, the expansion of NALP in the NT involved only Government (DET) schools. Non-Government schools have now been endorsed for inclusion.
