Graduate Certificate in Accelerated Literacy

The Graduate Certificate in Accelerated Literacy (GCAL) is a postgraduate course designed to provide high level teacher training in Accelerated Literacy pedagogy.

  • understand systemic functional grammar in a basic form
  • apply grammatical insights to literacy teaching (with an emphasis on teaching narrative text)
  • set language teaching goals at the level of discourse
  • understand pedagogy for teaching reading, writing and spelling
  • understand the need to focus on oral language development beyond the usual notions of form and function
  • understand the history that underlies past literacy intervention programs for Indigenous students.
