Graduate Certificate in Accelerated Literacy
The Graduate Certificate in Accelerated Literacy (GCAL) is a postgraduate course designed to provide high level teacher training in Accelerated Literacy pedagogy.
The course is offered in a flexible mode, a combination of guided self-study through LearnLine (online), and intensive (on-campus) workshops.
Graduates of GCAL can:
- develop high level literacy in Indigenous and other marginalised students in mainstream schooling
- analyse and adjust practice in the classroom to meet the needs of marginalised students
- adopt a critical perspective on pedagogy for Indigenous students
- understand systemic functional grammar in a basic form
- apply grammatical insights to literacy teaching (with an emphasis on teaching narrative text)
- set language teaching goals at the level of discourse
- understand pedagogy for teaching reading, writing and spelling
- understand the need to focus on oral language development beyond the usual notions of form and function
- understand the history that underlies past literacy intervention programs for Indigenous students.
