Department of Employment, Education and Training Chief Executive Margaret Banks today formally opened the Learning Strong (Kaltye Irrtyeke Ikerte) forum, building the professional skills of Indigenous educators delivering the National Accelerated Literacy Program in remote NT schools. Read more >>
13/03/08: More Professional Development Workshops in 2008
Following the success of the January Accelerated Literacy Intensive Workshop for teachers wanting to use Accelerated Literacy in their classrooms, more intensives will be run Mon 14 - Fri 18 April, and Mon 14 - Fri 18 of July 2008. Go to the Professional Development page to enrol.

The first series of Teaching Notes and Videos are now being published. Teaching Notes can be accessed via a password-protected area of this site (where copyright permissions allow). Notes and Videos can be ordered as printed copies via a special order form.To access the Teaching Notes and order form go to the Support Materials page, then complete the registration form to have log on details sent to you.
17/9/07: NALP releases promotional DVD and booklet showcasing program
The National Accelerated Literacy Program now has a five-minute DVD and 8-page booklet showcasing the benefits of Accelerated Literacy. Filmed at Ti-Tree, Karama and Anzac Hill schools, the DVD gives a first hand insight into how Accelerated Literacy works in the classroom. The award recognises the school’s successful Accelerated Literacy program now in its sixth year.
4/7/07: Brian Gray releases his book 'Accelerating the Literacy Development of Indigenous students'
Brian Gray, co-creator of Scaffolding Literacy, has just released a book exploring the theory behind the program. The book, titled Accelerating the Literacy Development of Indigenous Students, explains the reasons why Indigenous children typically find it difficult to succeed in the traditional classroom. Gray outlines an approach to teaching that breaks through low level engagement/low outcomes cycle to engage marginalised learners at an age-appropriate level, allowing them to ‘catch’ up to their peers.

A newly released report from the Centre for Independent Studies, What is working in good schools in remote indigenous communities?, highlights Accelerated literacy as one of only two evidence-based remedial skills programs that is successfully demonstrating improved literacy results for Indigenous students. 2/4/2007: NT Teachers Recognised for Teaching Excellence
Two Northern Territory teachers, including Kerry Regan, a member of the Department of Employment Education and Training’s NALP team, have been honoured with a 2007 State and Territory Teaching Excellence Award for the South Australia/Northern Territory region.
